Let's talk about keeping Piltover Archive free

Piltover Archive is growing faster than we ever imagined, and so are the costs of keeping it running. We’re introducing quiet, non-intrusive ads to help keep PA free for everyone, with an affordable ad-free option for those who prefer it. Here’s why we’re making the change, how you can help shape the rollout, and what’s coming next.

📢 Here's how we're rolling this out:🚫 Don't want ads at all?🚀 And because good news make everything better:

After weeks of hype feature drops, today's post is a different one…

Some of you will call this an L. Let me explain why it's actually the opposite.

In April 2025, I started Piltover Archive as a fun side project because I love Riftbound and happen to be a Software Engineer. What happened since then still doesn't feel real:

    • almost half a million decks built 🔨
    • almost 10 million cards added to collections 🗃️
    • registered PA accounts 👥
    80,000
  • close to 60,000 of you visiting every single day 📈
  • and a five figure sum paid out of my personal account to keep it all running 💸
  • That last number is the one this post is about. I'm a Riftbound enthusiast like everyone reading this, not a company with investors behind me. Our amazing supporters on Metafy have softened the blow over the past months, and I can't thank you enough for that. But at this scale, the monthly costs have long surpassed anything you could call a hobby—and none of that includes a single cent for the team, who have built all of this as volunteers.

So we needed a sustainable way to cover PA's costs without ever putting the site itself behind a paywall. Together with our partners at Metafy, we landed on the same model basically every big deck builder out there uses:

Ads, with a cheap way to turn them off.

    📢 Here's how we're rolling this out:

Starting today, you'll see placeholders in the spots where ads will go live by the end of the month. This is intentional. Before a single real ad runs, we want your feedback on placement so we can fix what bothers you while it's still just a box. If a placeholder gets in the way of how you actually use PA, tell us and we'll adjust.

A few honest words about the ads themselves: There will be one small ad in the deck editor, since that's our most used page, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. What we're launching has no autoplay, no video, and no popups, and we intend to keep it that way. Ads should sit there quietly and fund the servers, not fight you for attention.

🚫 Don't want ads at all?

We've added an ad-free tier on Metafy for $1.99/month. That's it. It covers what the ads would have earned and removes them completely.

It also comes with a perk we're pretty proud of: an ad-free profile. If you're ad-free, anyone visiting your profile won't see ads either. Your corner of PA stays clean for everyone who looks at it.

All existing Metafy tiers include the ad-free benefit too, of course. The $1.99 option is just there so removing ads costs less than a cheeseburger.

🚀 And because good news make everything better:

The teams feature is making big progress. We're on track to launch early access for selected teams in August. Great times ahead.

Thank you for being the reason a side project turned into all of this. We’ll survive ads together.
